Monday 6/23/2005: Player of the Week honors go to Kiyohara and Giles
It's the 5th time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Texas' first baseman Kazuhiro Kiyohara. In 25 at bats he hit .520 with 4 HR and 12 RBI. Kiyohara has walked 21 times this year and posts a .375 OBP. While batting .315, 87 for 276, he has driven in 65 runs. He's 8th in the American League in batting, 6th in homeruns and 1st in RBI! Brian S. Giles wins his 5th Player of the Week award. National League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. He had an on base percentage of .448 and hit .423, while driving in 13 runs. Giles has hit 13 homeruns this year while batting .306. He adds 18 doubles, along with 41 runs scored.
Saturday 6/21/2005: Kevin Appier turns in great performance against Los Angeles
LOS ANGELES - Houston's right-hander Kevin Appier is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Los Angeles found out the hard way, getting just 2 hits. Appier 2nd shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 27th shutouts in his career. 'I was hitting my spots. Now I'll start concentrating on my next start, and hopefully it will work again.' Appier (7-8) fanned 6 and walked none, throwing 104 pitches. The hitting star for Houston was designated hitter Mo Vaughn, he went 2 for 4, homering twice, scoring three times and collecting 5 RBI. The final score of the game was 9-0.
Thursday 6/19/2005: Atlanta's Batista out for 6-7 weeks
ATLANTA - When it rains, it pours. Atlanta's right-hander Miguel Batista will not pitch for at least 6-7 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Los Angeles where he left the field in the 8th inning. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Torn Tricep Muscle which will require surgery. In 8 starts this year Miguel struck out 38 batters in 57.2 innings of work. His ERA is 5.31, his record 3-3.

CLEVELAND - Oakland's right-hander Jeff Suppan is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Cleveland found out the hard way, getting just one hit. Suppan 1st shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 24th shutouts in his career. 'That was one of the best games of my career. I had my stuff working very well today.' Suppan (10-6) was overpowering, fanning 10 while walking 1, throwing 103 pitches. Torii Hunter provided Oakland with the offense Suppan needed as he went 1 for 4, homering once, and collecting 2 RBI. The final score of the game was 2-0.
