Thursday 10/2/2005: Mike Cather (PHI) will miss full season
PHILADELPHIA - Philadelphia's right-hander Mike Cather will not pitch again this year, suffering a serious injury in the game against St. Louis on Thursday. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Torn Tricep Muscle. Surgery will be performed next week. In 0 starts this year Mike struck out 64 batters in 114 innings of work. His ERA is 4.26, his record 10-3.
Thursday 10/2/2005: Roberto Alomar drills 5 hits
CINCINNATI - 'Wow, five hits in one game is something special, isn't it?' said Atlanta's second baseman Roberto Alomar after the 14-2 win over Cincinnati. His 1st hit, off Josh Fogg in the 1st inning, was a solo homerun and cleared the fence in center field. His 2nd hit, a two-run homerun off Josh Fogg in the 3rd inning, cleared the fence in right-center. A pitch from Mark Mulder in the 7th inning left his bat for a two-run double. He had singles in the 5th and in the 6th . Roberto scored 3 runs, and he collected 5 RBI as well! His 5 hit performance increases his batting average to .296.
Wednesday 10/1/2005: Hawkins and Nen receive Pitcher of the Month award
Chicago (A)'s LaTroy Hawkins had a terrific September, and it earned him the American League Pitcher of the month award. His record of 5-2 in 7 was among the leagues best this month. In 45.1 innings of work he allowed just 30 hits while striking out 46, compiling an ERA of just 1.59. This season Hawkins compiled an ERA of 2.62, going 12-14 in 40 starts. He fanned 244 while giving up 219 hits in 237 innings. It's the 1st time that the National League Pitcher of the Month award goes to Pittsburgh's pitcher Robb Nen. He went 4-0 in September and finished the month with an ERA of 1.03. He struck out 48 in 52.2 innings. Opposing players hit .236 against Robb this season. While posting an ERA of 2.94 he went 14-17 in 40 starts, fanning 293 and walking 50 hitters.

Anaheim's centerfielder Garret Anderson had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Batter of the Month. He hit .342 with 29 RBI and slugged .631 in 111 at bats. While compiling an on base percentage of .360, Garret hit .298 and slugged .519. He has collected 111 runs batted in this year. It's the 2nd time that the National League Batter of the Month award goes to Philadelphia's third baseman Alex S. Gonzalez. He had an on base percentage of .369 and hit .330, while driving in 23 runs. Alex S. has gone 193 for 573 (.337) this season, hitting 41 homeruns and driving in 112 runs. He has scored 132 runs on his own. He's 2nd in the National League in batting, 2nd in homeruns and 3rd in RBI!
Monday 9/29/2005: Huge blow for Philadelphia's Rosado, career over
PHILADELPHIA - It was one of baseball saddest days. Philadelphia's southpaw Jose Rosado fell victim to a career ending injury in a game against San Francisco on Monday. He complained about pain after throwing a pitch to Ken Griffey Jr., then suddenly collapsed. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Torn Rotator Cuff Muscle which will require surgery. This season Rosado compiled an ERA of 5.30, going 12-23 in 40 starts. He fanned 284 while giving up 310 hits in 275.1 innings. His career featured a record of 19-41 with an ERA of 5.55. Baseball will certainly miss this great player.
Monday 9/29/2005: Chicago (N)'s Varitek wins Player of the Week award
The American League's best player of the week was Oakland's Jeff Suppan, who wins the award for the 3rd time in his career. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 1.13 while going 2-0. He hurled a shutout as well. In 39 starts this year Jeff struck out 347 batters in 283.2 innings of work. His ERA is 3.01, his record 20-14. Jeff has pitched 2 shutouts and 5 complete games. He's 8th in the American League in ERA and 6th in wins! Chicago (N)'s catcher Jason Varitek had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. Jason was on fire, hitting .455 with 2 HR and 9 RBI.
Sunday 9/28/2005: Frank Catalanotto knocks lights out with three homeruns
CINCINNATI - Chicago (N) beat Cincinnati 4-2, but that was not the real story of the game. Frank Catalanotto was, as he went deep three times. His 1st blast, a solo homerun off Jay Witasick in the 5th inning, landed an estimated 422 feet from home plate. That one tied it at 1 runs apiece. His 2nd shot, a solo homerun off Jay Witasick in the 6th inning, cleared the fence in right field. A pitch from Freddie Villagomez in the 9th inning left his bat for a solo homerun, landing 423 feet from home plate in right-center. Frank finished with 3 hits in 4 AB, scoring three times with 3 RBI. Carl Everett was the last player to hit 3 homeruns in a game, doing it 7/9/2005.

In 38 starts this year Ben struck out 184 batters in 240.2 innings of work. His ERA is 4.38, his record 11-15.
